In 2024, PBS Michiana WNIT commemorates five decades as a broadcast station. The documentary will revisit pivotal moments in the station's public television legacy.
Originating in 1968, WNIT TV emerged as a grassroots initiative to launch an educational television station. From its inception as a broadcasting training ground to its evolution into a producer of documentaries and television programs, WNIT has remained steadfast in its mission to deliver high-quality educational and cultural content. This special program will reflect on the challenges, achievements, and contributions of volunteers, students, and staff members navigating a changing media landscape while upholding the station's values as a vital voice, storyteller and educator in the community.

- Pre 11/7/1967 - Community group forms, leadership primarily from South Bend - Mishawaka - Elkhart - Notre Dame
- 11/7/1967 - Federal Public Broadcasting Act Signed
- 6/19/1968 - Articles of Incorporation Filed
- 1968-1973 - Jerry Hammes MPBC Board Chair during formation and initial construction phase
- 6/19/1969 - IRS Determination letter received giving MPBC 501c3 status
- 4/26/1972 - FCC issues WNIT a Construction Permit
- 10/2/1973 - First Studio Equipment Deliveries arrive at Elkhart Career Center Studios
- 10/4/1973 - Transmitter was delivered to transmitter site in South Bend (transmitter was purchased “used” from a station in Wisconsin
- 1/31/1974 - WNIT’s first official broadcast
