I am disappointed to share that late last night, Indiana's two-year state budget proposal excluded all funding for Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations, a critical investment that has long supported the essential services provided by public media stations across the state. Despite being in the governor's original budget proposal, and passing through both the House and Senate without amendment, we are facing a future without support from the state of Indiana.
State support comprises 10% of PBS Michiana - WNIT's budget. While we understand there is a budget shortfall, the complete zeroing out of funding without warning is unexpected and urgent. The loss of these vital funds will be felt across our viewing area.
PBS Michiana - WNIT plays a critical role in our community. We are the area's largest classroom, providing access to trusted education programming and preparing children for school and lifelong success. We are the community's storyteller, bringing original programs made for and about you and your neighbors to the screen. We bring the stage and arts to life in your home. We are a crucial part of the emergency alert system, reaching more households than any other communication system. Rolling back our funding puts all of this at risk.
If you are a resident of Indiana, you can contact your state representative and let them know that you value public media.
We need your support, now more than ever.
PBS Michiana - WNIT is for everyone. Thank you for believing in the power of public media.
