WNIT's Ready To Learn Service reaches out to families with 9 hours of weekday children's programming that educates and entertains. These programs focus on the important developmental and social skills that most children need to succeed in school. With our outstanding television schedule as a base, WNIT is reaching out to community organizations with a series of workshops designed to train parents, teachers, and other caregivers in using television as a teaching tool. Our goal is not to teach parents to use more TV, but to use it more effectively, We discuss why it is good parenting to turn off violent programs and turn on SESAME STREET or CLIFFORD. We go on to suggest that it is good parenting to sit with your child, to interact with the program, to sing along and to do an activity. We distribute parent workbooks, magazines, and schedules to reinforce the training and provide parents with simple projects they can do at home. Finally, we suggest that every parent turn off the TV and read with their children.
If you would like more information about a workshop or are interested in setting up a workshop for your group, please contact WNIT's Director of Content and Outreach.
